Looking for a Halloween candy pattern? This Halloween spiral lollipop pattern is another great decoration to go along the Halloween Swirl Lolly. Change the colours, and it will transform into a yummy lolly for any festive occasion: birthday party, funfair decor, kids crochet candy store. This pattern is more destined to advanced crocheters because of the frequent colour changes in the round. But who doesn’t like a little challenge to master a new technique! I’ve made a video of the first few rounds to help you do just that. Scroll down to check it and if you feel like “I can do this!!” just dive in!

After I did the Halloween swirl lolly, I felt it was a bit lonely, and of course I wanted to make a second one (and then obviously a third one because good things come in threes, right? but that’s for my next post! shh!). And my husband made the annoying comment “so pretty, but why didn’t you make it in orange and black?”…Duh!
Alright let’s make an orange and black lollipop then (cause like often, he was right!). I needed a new type of spiral. I like the spiral effect of these lollies. But it’s for Halloween so it needed to be very swirly, it makes it more devilish.
Scroll down for the free pattern or you can also directly purchase a nice add-free pdf version of this pattern in my shop on Etsy for a small fee. The pdf version has all the pictures, instructions, and it’s ready-to-print to carry along with you wherever you want to sit and crochet!
Good news! You like the Halloween Lollies set and want to have all three patterns in one place? The pdf regrouping the Halloween Swirl, Spider Web and Spiral lollies will soon be available in my shop on Etsy. Stay tuned!

MATERIAL
- 3.5mm / US E-4 crochet hook
- Yarn: #3 / DK / light worsted yarn, 8ply, 80% cotton 20% Milk Fiber, in orange, black, and light beige (I use a local shop yarn, but you can combine any colour)
- Fiberfill
- Tapestry needle
- Optional: a wooden stick of 5 mm diameter and 13.5 cm length (you can use a longer one and saw it to the right length with a bread knife). 5mm diameter is approximately the size of a wooden disposable chopstick, if you have some in your kitchen drawers.
LEVEL
Advanced, because of the frequent colour changes. But it’s accessible to intermediate crocheters if you’re up to a challenge and learning a new technique. Once you get the hang of the colour change, it’s nothing but single crochet and increases…
GAUGE AND SIZE
- With the above material: 5-round circle = 5cm (2″). Find out how to measure gauge for amigurumis in my tutorial here.
With the material mentioned above and when gauge is achieved:
- the stick is 16.5cm (6,5″) long (the top will be hidden inside the lollipop)
- The lolly diameter is 10,5 cm (4,1″)
PATTERN NOTES AND SPECIAL TECHNIQUES
- The number before the abbreviation represents how many times to work one type of stitch into consecutive stitches from the previous round. Ex: 3inc = work one increase into each of the next 3 stitches.
- This pattern has two parts, the candy swirl, and the stick. Alternatively, you can also directly glue a wooden stick to the candy swirl with hot glue and skip the crochet stick part of the pattern (but then it’s not child safe for toddlers or young kids, remember to always monitor closely when toddlers or young kids are playing with toys).
- If you need a reminder on how to change colour I got you covered and shot a video with the first few rounds of this pattern. The video is available below in the spiral pattern.
ABBREVIATIONS
This tutorial follows US crochet notations.
- sc: single crochet
- inc: increase (= work 2sc in the next stitch)
- dec: single crochet decrease (single crochet 2 sts together)
- st(s): stitch(es)
- [number]: total number of stitches of the round/row
- Rnd: Round
- (…) x 2: repeat whatever is in between the parenthesis the number of times indicated
- “colour name”: change colour with the one indicated in the parenthesis. For example, “orange sc, inc, black 2sc” means: with orange yarn, work one single crochet in the next stitch, then one increase in the next stitch, then change colour with black yarn and work 1 single crochet in the next 2 stitches.
For more clarity I’ve used orange and black colours in the instructions so you know what to crochet with orange yarn and what to crochet with black yarn.
HALLOWEEN SPIRAL LOLLIPOP CROCHET PATTERN
THE SPIRAL PATTERN
Before you start, you can check the video of the first few rounds below to see how to make the colour change.
Start with orange colour.
Rnd 1: work 6sc into a magic ring. [6]
Rnd 2: [(orange sc, black sc) into the same stitch] x 6. [12]
Rnd 3: Skip the first stitch. (Orange inc, black sc) x 6. [18]
Note: you have just made 18 stitches, but because you skipped the first stitch, your round counts only 17 sts, this is normal. The first st of your round has now disappeared under the last st of this round. This [number] will keep indicating the number of stitches you actually make for each round.
Rnd 4: (orange 2sc, black inc) x 6. [24]
Rnd 5: (orange sc, inc, black 2sc) x 6. [30]
Rnd 6: (orange 3sc, black sc, inc) x 6. [36]
Rnd 7: (orange 2sc, inc, black 3sc) x 6. [42]
Rnd 8: (orange 4sc, black 2sc, inc) x 6. [48]
Rnd 9: (orange 3sc, inc, black 4sc) x 6. [54]
Rnd 10: (orange 5sc, black 3sc, inc) x 6. [60]
Fasten off and make a second one. For the second one, don’t fasten off, after the last stitch of round 10, change colour with orange. Put both circles together, wrong side to wrong side, so that they are hidden inside, and try to match orange and black stitches of both circles. Single crochet both circles together, leaving a 4 stitches opening at the end to insert the stick. Leave a tail to sew the stick.
THE STICK CROCHET PATTERN
With your light beige yarn:
Rnd 1: work 5sc into a magic ring. [5]
Rnd 2-29: sc around. [5]
There are several options to stuff the stick:
- you can use fiberfill if it’s destined to children and you want a safe toy, the downside being that it will be all flexible and will be bending with the weight of the lollipop spiral.
- you could use a pipe cleaner, but it will also be a bit too flexible and it’s not child safe.
- my preferred option is to use a wooden stick to put inside to have a rigid stick. If it’s big enough (like chopsticks diameter) and if the ends are flat and not sharp it should not go out easily.
Of course you can adjust the length of the stick to your liking with a few more rounds or a few less. Fasten off, sew closed, and leave a long tail to sew the stick to the swirl.
ASSEMBLY
Fill the lollipop spiral slightly with fiberfill (not too much so that it remains a bit flat). Insert the stick in the lollipop opening, leaving approximately 13 cm (5,1″) of the stick outside the spiral. Using the orange tail, sew the stick to the lollipop to close this hole and secure the stick.
Congratulations! Now if you’re hooked and want to complete your Halloween decor I’m sure you’ll like the two other lollies of this set. The free patterns of the Spider Web Lolly and the Halloween Swirl Lolly are available on my blog, and the printable pdf are available for purchase in my Etsy shop.
