THE INSPIRATION FOR THIS BABY MOBILE

I made this mobile for my cousin’s baby when we were both pregnant (our own birthdays are 6 days apart and we were pregnant with our first baby at the same time, how cool is that!). Then I loved it so much that I had to make the same for my own baby!!! That’s what happens when you put all your heart and love in home made gifts for your loved ones, you just want to keep it for yourself haha!

You could also use the ornaments separately in other projects, like the stars for Christmas, or the cloud and moon for another sky-theme mobile, or make a garland out of it. Sometimes garlands are an easier gift because you can hang it anywhere in the room.

Scroll down for the free patterns links below or you can also directly purchase a nice add-free pdf version of this bundle in my shop on Etsy for a small fee. The pdf version has all the pictures, instructions, and it’s ready-to-print to carry along with you wherever you want to sit and crochet!

MATERIAL

  • 3.5mm / US E-4 crochet hook
  • Yarn: #3 / DK / light worsted yarn, 8ply, 80% cotton 20% Milk Fiber, in dark blue, mustard and white (I use a local shop yarn, but you can combine any colours you like)
  • Fiberfill
  • Tapestry needle
  • Star shaped sequins with a hole to embroider
  • Yellow sewing thread (or any other color similar to your sequins’ color)
  • Sewing needle
  • 20 cm (8″) metal ring (or a wooden embroidery hoop)

  • Stitch marker(s) (or a piece of thread to mark your round beginning)
  • 2m (78″) golden yarn or decorative string to attach the elements to the mobile. Depending on where you intend to hang the mobile, you might need more, for example if you hang it to the ceiling. You can use either the same decorative string, or join this string with a transparent craft nylon thread.

LEVEL

Intermediate (Moon and cloud: beginner / Stars: intermediate).

GAUGE AND SIZE

  • With the above material: 5-round circle = 5cm (2″). Find out how to measure gauge for amigurumis in my tutorial here.

With the material mentioned above and when gauge is achieved:

  • The moon is 8 cm (3.1″) high
  • The cloud is 9 cm (3.5″) wide
  • The large star is 8.5 cm (3.3″) high and wide
  • The smaller star is 7.5 cm (3″) high and wide
  • The ball is 4 cm (1.6″) in diameter

PATTERN NOTES AND SPECIAL TECHNIQUES

  • All the pieces of this pattern are worked in continuous spiral rounds (i.e. without closing the rounds with a slip stitch). It may help to mark the first stitch of each round with a stitch marker.

  • The number before the abbreviation represents how many times to work one type of stitch into consecutive stitches from the previous round. Ex: 3inc = work one increase into each of the next 3 stitches.

ABBREVIATIONS

This tutorial follows US crochet notations.

  • sc: single crochet
  • inc: increase (= work 2sc in the next stitch)
  • dec: single crochet decrease (=single crochet 2 sts together)
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • [number]: total number of stitches of the round/row
  • Rnd: Round
  • (…) x 2: repeat whatever is in between the parenthesis the number of times indicated

ASSEMBLY

Mobile crochet ornaments

With your tapestry needle, sew a long piece of your golden yarn (or decorative string) to your first ornament (for example the moon) and attach it to the metal ring with a knot, then to the small ball at the center. Repeat for each ornament, making sure the ornaments are approximately sitting at each cardinal point of the ring and the ball at the center of the ring. Adjust the length of the strings so that your mobile is nicely balanced when suspended.
