How to crochet “in BLO” (in the back loop only)

Sharing is caring!

Another crochet technique essential to master: how to crochet “in BLO” (in the back loop only). It is a basic technique, very much used in amigurumi projects. But don’t worry, it’s also a very simple technique, you should only need to check this once and you’ll get the hang of it.

MATERIAL

You can take ANY project you are currently working on in single crochet, so it doesn’t really matter which yarn, hook or colour you’re using.

In my tutorial I’m using:

  • 3.5mm / US E-4 crochet hook
  • Yarn: #3 / DK / light worsted yarn, 8ply, 80% Cotton 20% Milk Fiber in brown colour (I use a local shop yarn).

VIDEO TUTORIAL

When I started to learn crochet, straight to the point video tutorials always made things easier for me. Watching it “in action”, pausing it, trying on my side, watching it again… So here you go:

Et voilà ! I hope you liked this tutorial, and by the way, I have good news for you : now that you know how to crochet in BLO, you also know how to crochet in FLO (Front Loop only!). Exact same thing, in the front loop instead of the back loop. Pretty cool right?

When to use this technique?

There are many applications for this technique, but basically it can be for a texture effect or a shape effect. For example in my Christmas gift pattern I use it to create an angle to build the sides of my cube.

When you crochet in rows you can use this technique to create a cool wavy texture effect like on the picture below, it makes great cactus balls by the way!

It can also be used in some amigurumi patterns to attach a part of the body or a garment without having to sew it to the body: you can crochet it directly using the front loops left free on purpose.

These are only a few examples, I’m sure you’ll come across more on your crochet journey!
