In some patterns, you might come accross this instruction: “carry yarn”. And you’re like: what does this mean? How ? So don’t panick, I have several good news for you. First, I just did a video tutorial to show you in details two easy ways to carry your yarn for amigurumis. Second, it’s much easier for amigurumis than other crochet projects, because the wrong side of your work will be hidden inside anyway, which is not always the case, in tapestry crochet for example.
No time right now? Pin this tutorial for later.
If you have already started a project, just use your project material, it doesn’t really matter. If you want to practice, then I would advise to use a relatively thick yarn, like a #3/DK with a 2.5mm hook or a #4/worsted/aran with a 3.5mm hook, just to better see all stitches.
Let’s jump right in! In this video tutorial, I show you two easy ways to carry your yarn for amigurumis projects. You can try to train using both and choose the one you prefer. Keep in mind these techniques are great for amigurumis but might be different when crocheting other crochet projects like garments, tapestry crochet projects etc.
You might need to carry your yarn when there are several color change in a round and use alternatively different colors. This will avoid you to make too many color changes (with cuts and joining new yarn, and weaving in yarn tails etc).
Well clearly the second one if I have a choice. I find that carrying yarn at every single stitch makes your work a bit stiff, so I prefer to grab the yarn I’m carrying every four or five stitches. The only thing is to NOT forget to grab it (I’ll admit it happened when I wasn’t very focused!), and make sure the tension of this carried yarn is a bit loose, to keep a correct shape for your amigurumi.
I have the perfect project for you: Pipo the clownfish is the perfect amigurumi to train to color change with carrying yarn. Not too many colors, not too long to make, you’ll wont waste your yarn!
Let me know! Just send me an email at clotilde@octopuscrochet.com or send me a message on Instagram or Facebook, I’d be glad to know and make it one of my next tutorials!
